歌詞と和訳 One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful で英語の勉強

今日は洋楽での英語の勉強法をご紹介します。

歌詞にはネイティブの会話でも普段よく使われるイディオムが含まれていることが多く、聴きこんで自分で声に出すことで、「覚える」よりも「身に着ける」学習となること、そしてなにより、好きな曲やアーティストを選んで勉強することで、楽しく学ぶことが出来ます。




ポイントはいくつかありますが、まずは

1. 歌詞を見ながら聴く
2. 自分で歌ってみる
3. 気になるフレーズをチェックする

の繰り返しだけで、かなり英語力をアップさせることが出来ます。

今回は来日も控えている大人気のboysグループ、One Directionの"What Makes You Beautiful"を題材にしてみます。




この歌の中にも、日常で使えそうな表現がいくつか出てきます。

まずはサビの "Baby you light up my world like nobody else" です。
この nobody else は、『君だけ』を強調したい時によく使われる表現ですね。

"else" は色々な場面で使われる単語で、サビ前に出てくる everyone else （他の全員） はもちろん、someone else （他の誰か）や、レストランなどで使われる anything else? (他に注文は？)、what else? （他になにかある？）などのバリエーションがあり、覚えておくと便利です。

続いてまたサビから、"But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell"のフレーズ。
この"ain't"も、アメリカ人がよく使う単語です。これは、am not や are not、do not などの代用として使われる言葉で、元は黒人のスラングでした。少しくだけた not と覚えておけばよいかもしれません。

また、ここでは"smile at"が少しわかりづらいかもしれません。at がついていますが、smile at ...で、...に笑いかける、という意味になります。"smile to"という表現はされないので注意が必要ですね。
