アメリカのシンガーソングライター、Vanessa Carltonのデビューアルバム"Be Not Nobody"のリードシングルとして2002年にリリースされた本作"A Thousand Miles"、USビルボードのシングルチャートでは最高5位、オーストラリアでは1位と、現在までのところ、彼女のキャリアの中では最もヒットした楽曲となっています。

リリースは2002年ですが、曲のアイディアは1998年頃からあたためられており、完成にたどり着くまでにはなかなかの苦労があったそうです。タイトルについても、元々は"Interlude"（幕間、幕間の出来事）だったそうですが、いくつものレコーディングセッションを経て最終的に"A Thousand Miles"に落ち着いたようです。

その後はなかなかヒット曲に恵まれず、One Hit Wonder (一時の人)扱いされているVanessaですが、この曲の人気は根強く、様々なアーティストによってカヴァーされています。
